About This Project
A brand new deck and pergola in Virgil (Niagara-on-the-Lake) got its first protective finish. New wood needs to be stabilised and sealed quickly — the first coat of stain is what protects against UV and water from day one. We worked Benjamin Moore Woodluxe oil in Natural into every face, edge, and post top so the whole structure weathers uniformly. The finish soaks in rather than sitting on top, so Debra's deck and pergola will age evenly and avoid the peeling that ruins a film finish.
The Challenge
First-time staining on brand-new wood needs the right window. Too early and the wood still has mill glaze blocking penetration; too late and UV damage is already setting in. We confirmed moisture content was in range, cleaned the surface, and applied the oil before the wood lost its colour. The pergola added overhead reach work and tight corners that all needed back-brushing by hand.
