About This Project

The previous contractor had applied a solid stain, exactly the wrong product for a horizontal deck. Solid stain sits on the wood surface instead of penetrating it. Once water works underneath, it peels and traps moisture, accelerating rot from below. We power washed first, applied a chemical stripper, then used drum sanders, hand sanders, and grinders to remove every trace of the old paint. The result is a clean, open-grain surface ready to absorb a real finish. We applied Benjamin Moore Woodluxe in Teak, oil-based and translucent, which soaks into the wood rather than sitting on top. It will never peel or flake.

The Challenge

Solid stain removal is one of the most labour-intensive jobs we do. Peeling paint traps moisture and can mask early rot underneath. We inspected every board carefully during stripping, treated any affected areas, and only stained once the wood was fully dry and stable.
