Wood Restoration Services
What is Wood Restoration?
Wood restoration is the process of taking a deck or fence from it’s current state and applying many specialized tools & techniques to bring it to an enhanced state. This results in improved longevity and aesthetic appeal. Our process saves you time, money, and worry—so you can get back to hosting barbecues, relaxing with family, and loving your outdoor space again
We treat every project as a custom order, tailoring each step to your deck or fence’s unique needs. For the majority of decks & fences, the 3 essentials are wood cleaning, sanding, and staining/sealing.

Stain Types
Translucent Stains
The most common stain opacity we use for our projects. It offers subtle as well as not so subtle colour options. It doesn’t peel so maintenance is hassle free.
Solid Stains
It looks like paint and covers like paint, but it’s actually a stain. This option is best for decks and fences that have thick coats of paint or stain that can’t be removed. The best part about solid stains is they come in any colour you want.
Project Timeline
(* denotes essential portion of wood restoration)
Cleaning Day (Day 1)
-
We kick off Day 1 with a thorough chemical and power wash to remove dirt, mold, and algae. Doing this first ensures the wood is clear of debris and contamination before any further work, setting a clean foundation for stripping or resurfacing if needed.
-
If a deck or fence has stubborn, incompatible, or ugly old coatings, we apply eco-friendly chemical strippers on Day 1. This step removes failed stains or paint, giving the wood a fresh canvas so new stain can properly adhere and deliver lasting results.
-
For projects where the boards are beyond simple repair, we replace them entirely on Day 1. Handling major structural fixes upfront means the deck is stable and ready for sanding and staining later, avoiding wasted effort on damaged wood.

Finishing Day (Day 2)
-
Once everything is dry and repaired, we sand the surfaces to remove splinters and prep the wood grain. This step maximizes stain absorption and helps create a smooth, uniform look—essential for achieving a professional-grade finish.

On Day 2, we tackle small fixes, like swapping out a single rotted board or loose railing components. Waiting until after cleaning lets us see any damage more clearly, and we can sand and stain the same day for a seamless finish.

Finally, with the deck (or fence) clean, dry, repaired, and sanded, we apply a premium stain or sealant. Doing this last locks in protection, enhances color, and ensures you’ll enjoy a durable, beautiful outdoor space for seasons to come.

Wood Cleaning *
Chemical Sanitation: The specialized cleaning solutions we use are formulated to break down mold, algae, moss, and other organic growth at a molecular level, ensuring they don’t quickly regrow.
Optimal Power Washing: Our commercial-grade power washing equipment provides the right pressure to thoroughly clean the wood without causing damage. This balance is crucial—too little pressure leaves embedded contaminants, while too much can gouge the surface.
Foundation for Successful Staining: Proper cleaning removes anything that might inhibit stain adhesion, setting the stage for a consistent, lasting finish.

Better Stain Adhesion
Prevents Mold Regrowth
Stain Stripping
Eco-Friendly Chemical Stripping: We use chemical strippers that are safe for pets, plants, and humans. These products break down certain types of synthetic stains and coatings without harming the wood.
Selective Stain Removal: Not all stains are the same—some penetrate deep into the wood grain, while others form a thick film. Our stripping process is tailored to the specific stain type to ensure full removal.
Restoring Wood’s Natural Beauty: Many old stains and coatings trap dirt, moisture, and damage the wood’s breathability. By stripping away failed coatings, we open the pores of the wood, preparing it for a high-quality stain that will adhere properly and perform better.

Sanding *
Commercial Floor Sander: By uniformly removing the top layer, we eliminate old stain residue and minor wood imperfections. This creates an even “canvas” that helps stains penetrate more uniformly.
Hand Sanding for Precision: Railings, edges, and corners require a gentler touch. We use hand-sanding to smooth splinters and maintain the shape of delicate wood details.
Grain Exposure: Opening the wood grain not only enhances stain absorption but also reveals the natural beauty of the wood’s texture and color.

Smoother, Safer Surface
Extended Lifespan of Wood
Staining & Sealing *
Premium Oil-Based Stains: Oil-based products penetrate deeply into the wood fibers, offering better moisture resistance and color retention. These stains do not peel or flake. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED
Solid Stain Options: Ideal for covering up older finishes or stains that are difficult to remove. Solid stains act more like a paint, offering a uniform color.
Sealing: A clear or lightly tinted sealant is a good choice for homeowners who prefer a more natural wood look. Seals typically require more frequent reapplications but maintain the wood’s intrinsic beauty and protect it from UV, water, and general wear.

Minor Repairs
Targeted Rotted Spots: Often, a few boards are compromised due to localized water damage or rot, while the rest of the deck remains structurally sound. Replacing these selectively is both efficient and cost-effective.
Seamless Integration: By tackling repairs right before sanding and staining, new boards blend in with the final finish, making the repair virtually invisible.
Structural Integrity: Even minor issues, if ignored, can spread damage over time. Early intervention ensures the rest of the deck isn’t compromised.

Seamless Final Appearance
Deck Resurfacing
Total Surface Replacement: When the surface boards are too far gone—warped, rotted, or coated with stubborn paint—it can be more economical to swap them out entirely while keeping the deck’s sturdy foundation.
Preserves Framework: As long as the support beams and framing are still in good shape, resurfacing avoids the expense of rebuilding everything from scratch.
Fresh Start: New boards provide a clean slate for staining and sealing, reducing future maintenance hassles and improving long-term performance.
